Today was mostly about the sky, it seems.

It was a day of bright changing skies. Took a couple of photos.

Tried to focus on working, but couldn't stay inside.

This evening, I haven't accomplished much since about 7:30. Pete phoned from a gig (I'll paraphrase his description: omega list celebrities, audience possibly including illuminati and definitely including Monte Burns) to tell me the lunar eclipse was visible.

I couldn't stay inside much after that. There were white clouds moving about, a bit of sprinkly rain and our beloved moon, in rare light.

I didn't even try to take photos. I know better.

Started taking photos of some new Poppets---here are three of them, sort of hanging out--but the light wasn't right and mostly I wanted to be with the moon instead. Will take more photos tomorrow.

Again with the sky. Some Poppets carry their own skies.

Here's a peek at the new chapbook. I'll keep you posted on its availability---should be very soon.

Poppets raining, in a stormy sky.

Time for food, and such. And after all is settled, a blanket and hot drink outside. Something tells me I need to spend some time looking up. G'night.

Growing Pains, Irish Poppets and Neil's Dead Bees

Our mail carrier is a very petite woman with a great disposition. More often now, she lugs our mail to the door in a bin that pretty much dwarfs her. Today I gave her a Poppet.

Poppet Planet is gaining its own dynamic. I think I began to really catch on when the Strange Studios dental insurance cards arrived. Bent and I must regularly redefine this animal we seemingly have by the tail. We've had a few months of very long work days and lots of decisions.
Hence, not so many blogs. I'd thought of blogging the experience as it happens. That would be sort of cool, right? On the other hand, it's really hard to grasp these life/professional lessons from inside. Most of them require the perspective of time. It's difficult to tell a story well without knowing the ending.

Lots of hard decisions. I'll tell you this though---one of the gleanings of late---I'm finding that when trying to choose between a this and a that, the best answer quite often is neither and both.

Quite the balancing act it becomes.

Hmm. Well, there you go. Maybe the answer to the blog or no blog question is to blog some.

I suppose that's what this entry is.

The largest box in the bin was from Neil. The first thing I did was to listen to it. Then I shook it and listened again. Bent and I took it outside to open. We immediatly agreed the estimate of 2000 was off. There are more. And they weren't completely dry, so opening the bag released a nice little cloud of....well, death. Yeesh. As bad as that was---thank goodness for dry desert air--experience teaches me that death is better than grape jelly as far as smells and dead insects go. Trust me on this one.

Now they're laid out on industrial sized sheets of aluminium foil in the sun. I'll have to keep an eye on them. Several things could go wrong at this stage, none of them good, from wind blowing them away to a bird feeding frenzy and any number of Gurtie or gardener related adventures between.

If enough of them survive the next couple of drying days, I'll make something---likely it will be for CBLDF. But we'll see. Technically, they're my dead bees now, but I'll always think of them as "Neil's Dead Bees." Just like "Neil's Dead Flies" and "Neil's Dead Cicadas" and...hmm...how about, just for fun, oh dear and brilliant one, send me something that isn't dead---like socks or candy?

I'll keep you posted on whatever 'bee' art transpires.

In the meantime, yes, we are working hard, if quietly, here in Palm Springs, with life going on all around and between. I'll try to blog about it a bit more often.

So far it looks like Poppet-wise March will be all about being Green, with a bit of having fun.

Poppets gather for farewells.

The amazing technicolor Poppet astounded the Red Queen's court, then went quietly on his way...

Today was somewhat about photography. Thought you'd like this group shot before Poppets go on their separate travels round the planet.

There was also some time for being outside and repotting plants and doing simple things, including accidently hosing Gurtie, who was none too happy.

Aubrey is baking more than ever now. She hopes to one day own her own specialty bakery. I can see it. We find delicious looking things covered in clear wrap with post-its that say "Do Not Eat" or "OK to eat." The last OK to eat was warm cornbread from scratch. The "Do Not Eat" was for her friend's birthday. We will all have to exercise more, but the house smells extra good, more often than not. She doesn't have school tomorrow. I'm hoping for pound cake.

Cotton Brain

No bees have shown up yet. I'm sure they will, the moment I forget about them. The weather is great here. Reading about the storms in the southeast, I hope the best for the survivors, sorry for the losses. Feel almost guilty when I walk around this neighborhood. I feel myself developing a growing sense of gratefulness for whatever day I'm in.

The studio is very busy, as usual, with several projects going on at once. We're walking in the mornings.

I got nothin', really. My brain is tired from way too much administrative work and lack of feeding. I'm taking some breaks. Opened the latest Smithsonian to find an ad for nullphysics.com. Sheesh. Terrence....for shame.

I need a good geek-out! But first, a break from all thought. The easiest way to go there is to get into a zone. Pete is working, Orion is settling in. Your artist is going to shut down this house, put on Rez and tune out to some excellent shooting.

It's like a massage for the mind. (hope it works--tomorrow will tell)

Neil's Bees, Little Dead Girls Like To Play Too

Little Pink's Playset is the last of the pieces for the Valentine's sale.

As for every event, we have works nearly finished but not ready. Now that the ebay store is up and running, I can add those pieces when they're done.

The Neil phoned this morning, having suddenly found himself in possession of two thousand dead bees which, naturally, made him think of of me. So next week sometime I expect a box of bees at my door.

I hope they don't smell like grape jelly. Or any other sort of jelly.

And I hope they're actually dead.

"Bees are strange," he said, "you might think they're dead, even when they're not."

I could sense his grin, so I told him not to get his hopes up---I'd open it outside. But I did promise to have someone with a camera, in case of whackiness.

I'm thinking he'll keep them inside at his house for day or so to check for dead-deadness. I'm thinking a box that suddenly began to buzz wouldn't go over well at the post office.

And I'm thinking about having fun with two thousand bees. Thanks Neil!

Happy February.

Sadness and Light

Palm Springs has lost Earl Greenburg. This is sad news and many will miss him. He leaves a legacy of spirit and kindness.

Today was for spending time with Aubrey and Orion. It was a simple day of shopping, eating and driving around in the sunshine, made all the more 'sweet' because Orion absolutely fell in love with a little concertina and being five, wanted to play immediately. You haven't lived until you've driven in traffic with live accordion 'music'. Rubber floors make for interesting acoustics.

Tonight is for TV and possibly fireplace-roasted marshmallows.
Life is short. It's up to us live ours meaningfully. Love is a verb. Happiness is a choice.

February Sale, Poppets Kissing video, Sourpuss

Here's a quick no-frills look at the kissing Poppets in action: In case of earthquake, kiss.

And a photo of a new Bent and Lisa Poppet collaboration series we're very excited about called "Monday Poppet and Sourpuss."

Pink is the New Black? Pfffuff. Whatever.

The Poppets Love February sale is up and running. The open edition Poppets are up and all of the ooak Poppets (5) as well. We'll be adding a few more pieces this weekend.

Yay! February!

Poppets are excitable

Today is for photography. It's cold-ish outside, but the light is good and the Poppets are behaving, mostly. Well, except for one excited Love Bug, who just couldn't keep still.

Oh well. All in a day's work.

Thought you'l like these 'out' takes and a peek at some new goodies.

Sale starts tomorrow! Actually, now.

Poppets Love February.

Back to work for your artist. I think the poppets may be getting into the chocolate stash. Sigh

It's Monday?

Today was a 13-hour day in the studio. In my head it's this mosaic of pictures, starting with me there alone with my coffee and Gorecki, feeling pretty satisfied to be starting the day that way.

There are lots of other images, sounds too, coming faster, louder and brighter. Working, talking, power tools, shouting over power tools, music, laughter. Breaking for lunch. Breaking to walk in the blustery/cool desert winds. Taking notes and making calls. Planning things, sketches. Big projects, small projects and Poppets.

People in until we were full, then leaving one at a time until, once again, it was just me, quiet and feeling pretty satisfied to be ending the day that way.

Soon I'll be showing you the stuff we made and then we'll pack up the Element (aka, the rubber car) with blankets, snacks and head up the mountain to get a good look at the stars---and maybe play in a bit of snow.

Dangerous Poppets may lurk in your future

I took a walk at four. When I set out, it was day. When I returned, it was night. But all my steps seemed planted firmly in the in-between, where weirdness and ideas happen. It's cloudy and coldish in the desert and life has been a little too interesting at times this week. Often my walks are mostly about the mountains, which are, well, mountainous, unaffected by whatever chaotic skies are passing over, whatever chaotic scurryings below. The sight of them brings calm, but not comfort.

We're busy in the studio and I'm working on book projects as I can, especially inspired by Derek's (ReallyRatherNotNice) new work.

Happy Birthday to the Vanda Luna who popped inexplicably into my head early this morning, connected to last month's solstice. Remnants of a dream? Dunno. Anyway, Happy Birthday Laura!

This week I'm reading yet another offspring of The Edge. This one, What's Your Dangerous Idea? poses the question to many of the most respected 'thinkers' of various disciplines. The essays are short and readable enough to exercise the brain painlessly. Truly mind-expanding.

I've read several of these Edge books edited by John Brockman, as part of an ongoing effort to squeege that third eye of mine, still stubbornly cloudy after all these years.

No worries. It's the journey, yes? So many books---our walls are filled with them---have brought me countless hours of great joy.

Why haven't I made a 'reading' Poppet? A tiny autodidact. What was I not thinking? What's wrong with me?

Sheesh. So many Poppets. So little time...

Some of the Poppets for Valentines are excellently sweet. Some are excellently not. Now, I'm dangerously in the mood for dangerous Poppets. Go figure.

But first, chicken soup for the little constellation, who is down with a very mean cold. We're stocked up with soup, meds and otter pops.

Travel well tonight.

Poppet Loves You

We've been busy indeed, in the studio, with blustery winds all around us.

We're taking orders now for the blushing Pink "Poppet Loves You" Poppet for Valentine's Day gifts.

You can order one now, and we'll ship it to arrive between the 11th and 14th of February with your message.

Cool, huh? Or at least, extra Poppety sweet.

Of course, you can also order one for you.

Back to work for your artist. There's lots more to be done.

Jack is Back A Brief Look at "Fortune's Teller"

Fortune's Teller is finally leaving us tomorrow. We have scads of photos from along the way. And stories. Remember the sign on the studio door--the one that states "Nothing Can Go Wrong Now?" An absolutely absurd variety of things went wrong with this one. You can't write this stuff.Possibly one day I'll write about it. But not today. I need some time travel to balance my perspective on it. Right now all I want to do it get the thing safely where it's going with no more surprises.

I particularly like the still image of Jack. I'll likely add some text for a t-shirt image for myself. If you like it too, let me know and I'll make some available.

If you don't know who Jack is, you can read about him in Smoke and Mirrors. Fortune's Teller is partially created from the original casting mold for "Don't Ask Jack."

The "Dark Caravan" kinetic carnival began with Jack. It's fitting that the last piece of the carnival features his likeness. It's also fitting that Poppets have infiltrated the carnival, showing up increasingly in the later sculptures.

There are twelve fortunes on the wheel including, Dreams That Wake Hold Warning and A Glimpse Ahead Will Change Your Mind.

This time the wheel stopped at Don't Eat the Dumplings. Sounds silly yes, but I'm pretty sure he means it.

The music is "Sever," by Porcupine Tree on Signify.

Hope you enjoy it. G'night

Geek Heaven, Fiddly Stuff and One Big Smile

Whoosh! Where did the week go? My plan to quietly reorganize the studio and work on books for January jumped track when we had to make room for more studio help. That's how it goes! Sometimes we have to switch gears in the short term for the sake of the longer.
So the quiet week turned into a sort of tornado of activity. Still, I'm managing to find pockets of time to work on book projects.

But now it's the weekend, and I'm really, really tired of thinking. All day I'm trying to focus on simple tasks. It's not working completely---thoughts and ideas creep in around the edges. Thanks to the life-hacks at Make, I reach for my notebook and jot things down instead of getting sidetracked. Too often and I'll have to slap my own hand. That's no good. I already talk to myself. My family doesn't need any new worries about my sanity. I need swimming. Or Wii, or some cheesy movie on demand. And cake, maybe.

Anyway. That's my Saturday, sort of. If you're even remotely as geeky as me, you'll love it here.

And finally, Alison sent me this photo. Logan has begun to laugh. That makes me happy.

Two, Two, Two Days In One

...or, what I did today.
(For those who get the title reference: Saturday mornings: Tarzan? or Stooges?)

Beginning with three alarms. Two kids to two schools. Pete, me, divide and conquer. Apparently, winter holiday is over.
With coffee-- made notes for a program lecture. Read two articles in Make magazine. Ordered a material sample from a company mentioned in Make.) Then answered emails/calls.
Angie and I started the studio day with a walk. So weird here, considering the weather all around us. Clouds are rare in the desert, so on days like today, I take photos. Tomorrow she can take a photo of me. I wonder what I'll say.
Photos above, but not likely in this order:
Clouds
More Clouds
This is Angie (who says 'nice clouds)
Snowy Mountains with Clouds
A Very Cooperative Bunny (not interested in clouds)
Some Rushing Water (Used to be clouds)
Aunt Beru's Place (looking east, where clouds are clearing.)
I have now typed 'clouds' often enough that it looks strange and misspelled.
After clouds:

I worked on the designs for Valentine gift boxes and tags. Set a time frame for direct gift shipping. Numerous other things on the Valentine checklist.
Ben and I worked out more of the mechanical details for the Strange Machine sculptures that will accompany the Neil Gaiman stories. Discussed wood and lighting choices. Set up a time frame for materials and building, which will be sooner than later, to give me enough time to install the art and painting. We drank too much coffee.

Made a decision about another glass case---what to do with it, when, and where to store it in the meantime. (several of these decisions have to be made to clear space, which we've clearly run out of.
While we talked, I cast three pairs of rats and Ben sorted table clutter into bins. The new tabletops will go in tomorrow morning.
We measured and moved and sorted and made satisfyingly noticeable progress in the reorganization of the studio. The chaos now at least looks like the chaos of sane people.
Ben made lunch for us. I can't remember what the dish is called. It had rice and vegetables, and a sausage made of rice and crawdads. It was delicious and had a nice texture, but I'm not sure how I feel about the crawdads. I like shrimp, and I know that where the 'bait line' intersects the food chain is relative and subjective. But after today, I'm fairly certain mine runs right there between shrimp and crawdads. Anthony Bourdain would likely be ashamed of my tiny-mindedness in the matter of crawdads.
The rest of the day was divided into illustration work for the first Poppet book and creating a framework so Angie can organize illustrations and reference photos for other book projects onto disk.
There's more. So much more. But I'm slipping into the 'it's time to stop and I need food' mode. I am definitely not planning to work this hard tomorrow. Sheesh!
While getting juice for Orion, I ate a slice of baloney without even thinking about it. Sheesh. I'm trying to not eat that stuff. Oscar Meyer, why must you torment me?
Anyway. That's sort of how the day went.
Possibly "What I Did Today" is actually worse than no blog at all, but that's all there is and there isn't any more.

Blushing Poppets, Big on Cox, We want Poppets NOW!

A quick hello and check-in. I'm happily working away on book projects and helping with reorganizing the studio. It's a good mix.

The weather is weird. Dark and cloudy and cold. Bright orange fruit against cold gray skies is odd and oddly beautiful. They're a good mix too.

There will be two new open edition Poppets for February. We'll get them up in plenty of time for gift giving, and will even send them directly to friends and family for you, nicely wrapped and with your message.

Poppets like love. And candy.

Tonight we saw Walk Hard, The Dewey Cox Story. If you liked 40-Year-Old Virgin, you'll like this movie too. Pete and I, and many others in the theater, laughed from start to finish.

Your wish is our command! Poppets on Demand!

Now Little Red Poppets are available when you need them, gift wrapped and ready to send out into the world or to invite home to live with you.

WARM Little Red Poppets NOW
and
10% to Comic Book Legal Defense Fund

And, if you're in the mood for expanding your mind, visit the edge. Take a Poppet along!

Hope you're January is going well.

Happy New Year

Tonight we gave a dinner party in honor of Ben's grandparents, who are in their nineties. They are active, intelligent and lovely. They inspire everyone around them.

Yesterday and today were for making everything about the setting and dinner extra special.

That meant things like polishing silver and cleaning every corner. Then making things like prime rib and extremely delicate and persnickety chocolate sauces.

It was for choosing the right linens and candles and scents. It was for dozens of other details. Everyone who's ever put on a formal dinner party can appreciate the work involved.

So then, I cut the tip of my right ring finger at about 5pm, and Aubrey had to step in and finish a few things for me. Good experience for her. She hopes to own a specialty bakery one day, so improvisation is good practice.

It was so very worth every effort. But next time...I'm hiring help.

Anyway, the thing is... I had this really interesting sort of epiphany this afternoon. Taking the sage advice of the previously blogged life hacks, I made a note to write about it later instead of killing myself trying to get it written out now. It can wait.

I hope next year I make many things you enjoy. I hope next year we learn a bit more together. I like traveling through time and space with you.

I thank you for being with me this past year. Your input has relevance to my life and my work. You make me think. You make me laugh. Thank you.

Pete has gone to drive Ben home. Aubrey and Matt have gone to a party. I am not even really in shape to drive even this keyboard, between the dinner wine and the ..uh, cooking wine. Oh, then there's the huge bandage on my finger, which is throbbing nicely. That too.

So I'm going to put on comfy clothes and play Super Mario Galaxy with Orion. That, I can drive.

In the words of my beloved Sponge Bob Square Pants "You don't need a license to drive a sandwich."

Happy New Year!

Orange you gonna stay on target? Don't shave that Yak!

I start the morning by surveying the holiday carnage rife in every room of our home, in every corner of what used to look like an art studio.
A familiar feeling, like looking over a deep abyss, steals over me. I ask first the question of where to begin?
I could motivate myself with a nice bit of panic. No need. I have coffee.
Deep breaths instead.
It's reset time for the household and for the studio. This means there are long lists of things to prioritize, delegate, schedule and do. This year we have several large projects and many smaller ones and more humans involved. After the New Year holiday we'll 'hit the ground running'. We've been gearing up to this for months. Now, here we are. A bit scary, a bit exciting.
The good thing is that we work smarter than we used to. The good thing is that there is lots of work to be done. The good thing is that we are aware of many terrible things around us.
The good thing is that we will make every effort to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. The good thing is that we'll accept our human responsibilities without wasting time on guilt. The good thing is that we'll marvel at new technology. The good thing is that sometimes we'll screw up. The good thing is that we will make art. The good thing is that we're traveling through space and time, living our lives. The good thing is that it is we and not me.
They are all good things. Like the oranges I picked from our front yard today. Bigger inside than out, worlds unto themselves. But too many good things can roll us over if we don't stay on target.
Creative sorts of people tend to go off on tangents. This is often a good thing---my best ideas seem to happen when I'm busy at work already. But side trips can eat up our time, get us lost.
This sort of wandering, (particularly bad for types like me who tend to approach projects like we're fighting fires) can lead to distraction and frustration. One of the best bits of advice I've ever heard on this subject comes from life hacks Danny O'Brien and Merlin Mann.
In an article from Make Magazine (I cannot say enough about Make) they write:
"Solving the world's problems is something good hackers achieve, often as a side effect. But you don't have to spend all your time lost in your own life's subroutines - even if that's where the best fun is to be had."
If you find yourself deep in plans for the coming year, or trying to clean up the mess from the last, you might want to give things a closer look before you start. Seems to me that we could all use a good refresher course about yak shaving.
The new year approaches with all that comes with it. I think I'll use these last few days to clear my head, breathe deeply and stretch. It's never a good idea to run (or swim!) without warming up and stretching.
I know many of you are standing on similar starting lines. I'd like to hear your plans and ideas for implementing them.
Here we go again...

Ho Ho Ho. And cake.

The holiday tree sits in a bucket of water, ready for standing and decorating. Aubrey, Matthew and Orion will decorate and Pete and I will actually leave the house, brave the world and do some gift shopping.

It's our wedding anniversary today. We have brand new matching his and her colds, so are saving the fancy dinner until we can actually taste it. Instead, a simple night of shopping and later, a movie at home near the fireplace. We rented Angel A, having seen a preview at the local theater where we see most indie films.

We'll remember the wedding--the white paper pinwheels and gossimer in the breeze, the hundreds of candles, the mysterious mime on the dancefloor, which friends got drunk, who stepped in the fountain, that sort of thing. But not for too long, because we like now.

Now is pretty good.

And tomorrow is my birthday. Same plan. Simple and warm, but with cake.

Everything is better with cake.

And Gurtie, of course, says "whatever."

***

Ravyn has listed some of her painted foals on ebay and says they can arrive in time for hanging on the tree. You can't really appreciate how tiny and detailed these are until you see one in person. I have some, and I was surprised and delighted when I opened the packages.

Off to shop for silly things.

Truly Extra Ordinary

This has been a weekend for ordinary things. Several deadlines have been met, the rest are in the hands of others for the moment; shippers shipping, craters crating, printers printing and authors authoring.

Tomorrow very early, Ben and I are to begin the studio remodeling/reorganizing project. Then I'll start posting photos of studio work again. After a full year of projects and no clean up, we are(ok, I am) ashamed to show the state of our workplace.
Not to mention the massive tool migration. Screwdrivers and clamps, lying down together--I tell you it's madness.

Then there's inventory and restocking. Okay, the restocking is fun. It's partly comprised of drinking coffee and flipping excitedly through specialty tool catalogs. Happy Holiday to us!!

I'll likely show a couple of new pieces--several are very close to being finished. But mostly January will be for organizing and working on book projects, some Poppety and some---well, sheesh, I guess they're all Poppety in one way or another.

So yes, this weekend was about not hurrying and eating lots of food. I did brush my teeth, but I don't think I brushed my hair even once. I wore my favorite ratty jeans and a baggy sweater.

And it was for sleeping in a bit, with cats and kids. Well, one cat and one kid--but they require the space of two.

Pete and I watched the A & E presentation of Blazing Saddles with commentary, which gave us a whole new appreciation for a movie already a favorite.

We installed a new faucet in the kitchen. I'm pleased to say we were only squirted once. It's shiny. It doesn't leak at all. And it's shiny.

I liked the blue tv light on Orion's face as he watched 'The Grinch" (the animated one, with Boris Karloff.) At night before bedtime, he watches an episode of Samurai Jack. He likes the dubbing in French. He asks me questions. He reminds me that I speak French quite poorly.

And then there's this:

Just go to Media Matters to read the article.

Does Poppet laugh, fear for humanity, or both?
And, what would Bender say?

I'm glad for "off" weekends. Less news, More Mel Brooks.

have a good Monday.

Packing, Shopping

Today Orion is home from school with a croopy cough. Yes, it is winter in the desert. I'm finishing up the Play with Toys packing. Having fun with it, actually, working up front near the fireplace where it's warm and I can whisk Mr. Croop off to the bathroom for steam if need be.

The studio is very chilly today. No place for artists, unless they're Bent, who is somewhat like a polar bear.

And, shopping online. As every day, shopping online. If I'm not ordering studio supplies, I'm ordering gifts. Mostly books, lots of books. I'm thinking that this year I'll have done at least 80% of my gift shopping this way. But what about the romance of getting out in the nippy weather downtown? Forget it. Downtown Palm Springs can be fun, but it looks nothing like a city and everything like a strip of tourist shops at the beach. Except for the mountains.

anyway,

Angie (aka studio rookie) sent this little clip called "Shopping in Texas." Short and cute(?). Even though you already know what's coming, thought you might like it.

Anyone take their Poppets shopping? I'd like to see some Downtown Poppets on Tour. Uptown Poppets?

Cinnamon Reindeer Games

Ravyn sent me this Reindeer-costumed Foppet. Cinnamon Poppet makes a near-perfect playmate, so I paired the two to wrap up the holiday sale. Please forgive me for adding it on late, but it is so cute I couldn't bear to let it sit until next year. (Though I could've been persuaded to keep them for myself.)

It's Monday, and the last two weeks have seemed to be made up of 48 hour days and not much sleep.

It's like that during the holidays. The business is, well, busy. The museum project deadline is upon me and others, including the Strange Roads cover.

And this weekend Alison and Logan visited, Orion's best buddy Sophia had her birthday party...

it goes on and on. All of them good things, like loads of happy, healthy kids running around the Discovery Museum, sweet baby kisses and shopping for gifts online.

And yes, packing Poppets with notes to collectors.

Still, it's A LOT of good things.

So last night became one of those nights when I kept waking, thinking of lists and deadlines and worrying about things I could control and things I couldn't.

Trying to convince myself that I'm more 'enlightened' than the exhausted, stress-out human tossing in her covers didn't help a lot.

Even my favorite pillow seemed to be working against me.

So I found myself sort of lost in a blizzard of loose thoughts, stumbling much like the Poppets from my header, toward a vague light ahead where things can be sorted out with clearer vision.

Today I'm not so lost. It took a step back, a cup of coffee, watching a geek-humor-laden Simpsons episode with Pete and appreciating a view of the snow on the mountains. I know a good life when I see it, stresses and ow-my-back included.

I don't have to be superwoman today. I'll be happy to be a person who gets the day's orders shipped out and the plants watered.

Wish you all safe passage and hot chocolate in the winter weather.

Ghostly Pony, Wheels and Creeps

I received Foppets from Ravyn to join "Play With Toys." We have a big pony--and perfectly, slightly, ghostly -- for the Little Pink sculpture.

And a Foppet on wheels to go with a special Poppet painted meticulously with jacks and balls.

Also, artist RB DeWolfe stopped by the studio yesterday. I met her several years ago at the studio of the late bronze artist, John Kennedy.

You can see her work and learn more about her here.

Luckily, I managed to wrest a couple of pieces from her for the sale; a "Creep", this one, Nosferatu, and a "Smidgen" Nosferatu. I've listed them both at introduction prices and a bonus Little Red Poppet.

I had to. They're just too weird not to share.

Hope you're enjoying the Play With Toys pieces and your winter, so far.

We like changing our hats

I like it when Orion decides to join me for creative time. He says, "Today, I am a painter."
Which seems a poppety way of looking at things-- as they are, without pretext or qualifications.
It doesn't occur to him to think "I will be a painter," or "I might be a painter."
He paints, therefore he is a painter.
When the music went to an upbeat track, we gave each other that crazy look, took off our aprons and our jig, polka,
kung-fu combo took over.
We danced and so for the moment, were dancers.
For the moment can be a very good thing.
Tomorrow more Poppets will be sent on their various journeys. Then I'll be a painter too for awhile.
Tonight Pete and I saw "No Country for Old Men." We saw a window this evening to catch a movie and jumped a the chance to see a Coen Bros. film, knowing little else about it. I found it sparsely beautiful and well acted and early on was stuck by the quality of the writing. Sometimes, it's not a terrifically easy film to watch. The credits revealed it is based on Cormac McCarthy's 2005 book of the same title.
That explained a lot.
I read McCarthy's The Road this year, finding it one of the most moving books I've ever read.

Poppet Tricks

Today the voice of sanity spoke up and told your artist it's time to rest. This piece, called "Poppet Tricks" will wrap things up except for a couple of Foppet's Poppet (arriving in the next couple of days from Ravyn) and two other ooak Poppets. All adorable, of course.
The other art pieces will have to wait until January, for I must turn my attention now to completing the cover painting for Strange Roads.

And, I must start getting some sleep. Otherwise I'll be known as your late artist.

So there-- those of you bidding on pieces in the sale can know where things are, and that I won't spring a must have on you at the last minute. As much as I like trying to wow you, reason prevails.

Anyway, here is a little video of Poppet Tricks, an illusion box that proves most difficult to photograph, especially for a tired artist in a paint-stained apron in need of less coffee and more dreaming.
As always, I truly appreciate your enthusiasm and love of Poppets and other creations. Ebay doesn't allow mention of donation, but each sale sends support to organizations including, NCAC, NORML, CBLDF and The Bill Hicks Wildlife Foundation.

Because Poppets are more than pretty faces. As are you, dear readers and thinkers.

It begins to feel a lot like winter. Stay safe! Time for feet up and the joy of TiVo. (I do look forward to spending some time with that darling "Reaper" devil. As Bugs would say, "Ain't he a stinker!"
G'night

Play With Toys!

Saturday morning.

Play With Toys is officially open!

I'm happy to introduce "Whirligig I", the latest Bent/Lisa collaboration and "Goodbye Kitty", the newest RatBag rat sculpture.

And, sigh. We're still not done. It's terribly windy here with rainy, cloudy, changing skies. Not so good for photography. Not so good for artist types either, as we tend to linger at the windows.

Still, everything should be up by Monday, so please check back for new listings.

Play with Toys! Have fun.

and... Happy Almost Winter!
