Words are Powerful

March is National Reading Month. Every month is reading month for me and probably for you. I'll always love books - the ones made of paper. I don't know what it would take to wrest from me my copy of Lewis Padgett's A Gnome There Was. Likely, only death.

I just finished James Owen's Drawing out the Dragons. Currently I'm reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

My children are all readers. It's the one thing about parenting I can be sure I did right.

Words are powerful. A book can be a talisman against the darkness.

What are you reading now, and why?

I have just started China Mieville's "The Scar". I totally fancy this man: he has the most luscious vocabulary.

I just finished "The Graveyard Book" and I am starting to read "Strange Attraction"...shiver me timbers! Absolutely spellbinding-plus I thought it best to read it now instead of around Halloween. ;D I'm also reading "Little Red Riding Hood Uncloaked" by Catherine Orenstein-a very interesting book.

I'm reading "Language of the Night" by Ursula LeGuin. It's a collection of essays she wrote about sci fi/fantasy. Why? For the process, and to better understand the process and mysticism of story creation,

Just finished plowing through all of Sarah Addison Allen's books. They're kind of fluff but they're really, really good fluff. They're girly and Southern and sprinkled with magic.

Now reading "Whedonistas" (collection of essays about the worlds of Joss Whedon by the women who love them) which may be bad as now I just want to go watch all of Buffy and Firefly and Dollhouse and hibernate. ;)

Am on book 3, Game of Thrones. Had just finished 1 & 2. Also Steve Jobs bio. Oh, and Under The Dome by Steven King. InterWorld was fabulous by NGaiman. I got a Kindle at Christmas. This. Is. Bad. I'm not getting any art made cos all I wanna do is come home, grab a snack and get right back to my book. Till 1am. Someone help me. (but if you could wait till i finish 4 & 5 that'd be great) LOL

Terry Pratchet. Again. For like umptenth time. What can I do? Makes me snigger and giggle when I most need it.

Reading a novel about the Cathars (13th century), and another one about an Indian princess in the first half of the 20th century. Funnily, getting an e-reader has helped me read more. Still love paper books, though.

Ditto the Pratchett. He's wonderful, and while concentration yields better results, it's not necessary (and makes rereading rewarding!). I've been in desperate need of diversion lately, so, Unseen Academicals - just finished. Snuff - just begun. And 2 books on baking lovely desserts. What? I MIGHT get to it! But because I'm a librarian, I get to save book money for poppets! :D

I like reading fluff too...helps balance out the heavy and occasional chaos in my life. I like books by Madelyn Alt, Shirley Damsgaard (she's not too fluffy), Juliet Blackwell's "Secondhand Spirits" series and Abby Cooper: Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie.
I also just read through "Strange Birds" by Gene Wolfe...wow-I really liked the first story...the second was pretty intense-I liked the ending though.
Crydwynn...were the 3rd and 4th books by Sarah Addison Allen as good as the first two?

TerraMystic (I always forget to check back after I comment), nothing has been quite so good as Garden Spells but I did like them both. I liked The Peach Keeper a bit more than Girl Who Chased the Moon but both were definitely worth the read.

Thanks Crydwynn...I'll add both of Sarah's books to my Amazon cart...and I agree-"Garden Spells" was an absolutely wonderful read.

Just finished re-reading the DragonLance War of the Souls trilogy and I am lingering in no man's land trying to decide what to read next.

I THINK I am going to re-read Margaret George's Helen of Troy. Awesome book...
